The Family Cupcake Girl

From Cupcake Wars to DC Cupcakes, cupcakes are all the rage nowadays. I mean, who can resist those perfectly-sized portions of goodness?

In October I traveled home to Maryland, to do the D.C. Kidney Walk with my mom. We had a great time, but you know what the best part about it was? Georgetown Cupcakes (featured on DC Cupcake) donated boxes and boxes of cupcakes for all the walk participants! Talk about a a sweet ending.

I had Red Velvet. Sweet memories. *sigh*

My cousin Krystine is getting in on the action too. Let me tell you, she does a spectacular job in her presentation, and most importantly TASTE. She was such a sweetheart and made Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake cupcakes for my birthday last month:

I know you just bit at the screen! lol

My cupcake was special. She spelled out my full name in that delicious white chocolate. :)

She even did some for our cousin’s cupcake theme birthday party this month:

Berry-Vanilla-Chocolate Mini Cupcakes

She did such a great job that I decided to learn more about how she became the family cupcake girl:

How long have you been baking?

I have been baking ever since I can remember. I started off with muffins and crossed over to cupcake land!

What got you interested in baking cupcakes?

Anyone who knows me, knows I am very artistic and creative. I love all kinds of art: from colors to paintings to ceramics. When I make cupcakes, I feel as if it’s a great opportunity for people to see that crazy, creative, artistic side of me. So cupcakes are just another form of art.

How do you come with your designs?

Before I do any cupcakes for anyone, I must have a vision. I think of who I’m making these cupcakes for and what flavors they most likely would enjoy. So after I make my cupcakes and my homemade icing I think,  “what can I do to make these cupcakes look amazing but still simple?” Sometimes, I may melt some chocolate and create some designs or I might use mini umbrellas to make it tropical. Simplicity is the key.

Do you plan on having your own cupcake business one day?

I love baking cupcakes and experimenting, but I just want to keep it as a hobby. Maybe when I’m old and retired I will open up a little cupcake cafe. As of right now, I’m just doing it for the fun of it.

Well Krystine, I must say that I LOVE your new hobby! ;)

What about you? What are some hobbies that you enjoy?
